intro
Unpredictable debut album from funky but experimental Bostonian band, Guerilla Toss
Boston-based Gorilla Toss have been given the DFA Records' stamp of approval, so it is a safe bet that these guys will be at the forefront of all things ‘cool as fuck’ and slightly ahead of the curve. I find them to be that but there are also a few older reference points inescapably nestled in there too. There is a punk delivery to the ranting and at time spoken, at times yelled, lyrics from Kassie Carlson who is the mouth piece of the group. With the dominant, warped bass lines lines, however, of Phil Racz and the whirring guitar noise of Arian Shafiee which play against the bastardised disco rhythms provided by Peter Negroponte, it very much funk poetry. Keyboardist Sam Lisabeth veers from the glue which holds the band together to the sour milk that curdles the whole thing into something far beyond what you expected. At times it feels very Mr Bungle musically, which is never a bad thing, and this is carried off perfectly as the band veer into different rhythms at the drop of a hat, ‘Big Brick’ and ‘Grass Shack’ highlight this trait best. It is fair to say that ‘Eraser Stargazer’ is completely devoid of any predictability. Fans of Devo and Talking Heads are sure to appreciate the quirky delivery in such songs as ‘Diamond Girls’ and ‘Colour Picture’. ‘Eraser Stargazer’ is bound to infuriate and confuse people, but, however, it is also going to shake things up. Following the bands' growing popularity on the US live circuit, they will no doubt be turning heads and minds at a growing rate.
