intro

Superb folk pop on first album in seven years from former Chemikal Underground signing, De Rosa

De Rosa were a bright hope when John Peel still ruled radio and Chemikal Underground were in his thoughts. This Third LP in over 10 years from these Mogwai and Arab Strap devotees is reminiscent of REM at their best. If one assumes a whim translates as 'weem' in Scots' language, the album's breezy languish gains increasing momentum and logic. Ranging from light-hearted puns to deeply sensitive ponderings of the mind, 'Weem' blends sparkling guitar acoustics and pristine songwriting. This formidable showcase reaches a summit on the album's centre piece 'Failing Water'. If such a description was a forestay, De Rosa would count as mildly and exquisitely loud. Finger-picking good like Leo Kottke's or John Fahey's music, seamlessly followed by mellotron drama, this marks both sides to their sound. De Rosa save the best for the album's last track, 'The Mute', which in impeccable style glorifies its grim glory. The intrinsic quality on this album culminates in great beauty. De Rosa's jingle jangle folk pop has yet to meet its match.
