intro
Excellent fourth album from Portland cult Copy, who have been crafting solid dance music ideas over a decade
Marius Libman, Copy's producer, also plays bass guitar for Sun Angle, synthesizer for Regular Music, and has done remixes for Ratatat, Starfucker, and countless other musicians (both officially and unofficially), as well as co-hosting the Heavy Breather radio show on Xray FM. He is msot likely the striving force behind 'Chalice Agenda'. Holding cult status in Portland for nearly a decade, Copy have been crafting solid dance tracks that contain trace elements of disco, electro-pop, hip-hop, IDM, film music, kraut, and progressive rock; yet the results have always very recognisably continued to sound like Copy. Songs are melodic and subtle enough in the sense that they find themselves on repeat on your headphones long after the party has ended. 'Chalice Agenda', Copy's fourth full length album, continues in their tradition of combining deep analog bass with chunky, upbeat rhythms, coupling them with interwoven synth melodies which slice together patterns that can be both wistful and baroque, or soaringly bright and driving. 'Chalice Agenda' probably only vaguely resembles a catholic procession - I am in no position to tell - yet the album niftly twists the ordinary into something unique. With touches of redemption, the album appropriately enough is equally highly original as well as pastoral. It's almost as if one could hear the drizzle through these West Coast IDM exercises.
