Accessible and socially conscious country rock on fifth album from Bostonian-based band, Girls, Guns and Glory
Boston, MA is not exactly a hot-bed of country music icons, but Girls, Guns and Glory may just be in the business of changing that with the release of their fifth album ‘Good Luck’. The group, which comprises of singer/guitarist Ward Hayden, Paul Dilley on bass/piano, Josh Kiggans on drums and lead guitarist Chris Hersch, are putting their own stamp on the genre, combining socially aware songs which are littered amongst more traditional-sounding country numbers about love, loss, regret and… erm …cars. The environmentally-conscious 'Centralia' is one of the highlights of the album. More upbeat and rocky numbers like 'Be Your Man' and 'Shake like Jello' are old -fashioned country rock, and if that's your thing you will definitely enjoy them. Big choruses and classic structures show them as potentially radio bothering. 'Come On Honey' and 'Built For Speed' tread a less traditional trail and you get the sense this is more of what the band are all about as they hint at a love of melodic punk. Think Ramones, think ‘Warning’-era Green Day and you’re along the right lines. Taking as much influence from classic country names such as Hank Williams and Johnny Cash as from more contemporary artists, the Bostonian-based boys are due to come to the UK during October. I’m sure Girls, Guns and Glory will be making a name for themselves with their brand of accessible country.
