intro

Harry Sherriff finds inspiring the Liverpool Music Awards' annual celebration of local music took place this year in the stunning environment of St George's Hall in central Liverpool

This annual celebration of local music was positive, inspiring and a hit all round. The event sponsored by Liverpool City Council was held in the stunning St. George’s Hall and I haven’t been to an event that was better organised. The ceremony even ran ahead of schedule. The performances sounded brilliant in the hall and took place in the balcony as well as on the designated stage area. It was a visual, as well as sonic treat. Standout performances came from Bird featuring The Coral’s former lead guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones and sure-to-be-big Broken Men who accommodated R 'n' B rising star KOF on stage. Emotional moments came late on with the honouring of young musician Michael Molloy, who was killed in a coach crash coming home form Bestival last year. Steve Rotheram had the audience’s attention rapped when he took to the stage to talk about the Justice Collective’s successful single ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’. As the night closed you could tell everyone was proud to be part of such an event. The presenters all did so with energy, not outstaying their welcome and the artists were over the moon to win. It meant something. It’s nice to know young talented careers are being formed in Liverpool and that support is there. Special mention should also go to Founder and Director of the event Ellie Phillip. This was a wonderful, inspirational night, which makes you happy to live in a city so full of young talent and caring influential supporters.
