intro
Excellent 1960's-influenced psychedelia on debut album from Calfornia-based group, the Strangers Family Band
California combo the Strangers Family Band sound so similar to Brian Jonestown Massacre that some people will be scanning the credits to see if there’s any membership overlap. Although they seem to have shared a number of bills with former associates of Anton Newcombe, it seems that the outfit fronted by brothers Ric and Scott Seltzer only shares a jones (ahem) for the same far-out 1960's sounds both West Coast (e.g. West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Public Nuisance, late Chocolate Watchband, Moby Grape) and British (‘Their Satanic Majesties Request’, early Pink Floyd, some Canterbury Sound, Wimple Winch, S.F. Sorrow and 'Parachute' era Pretty Things). Fortunately the seven tunes on the Strangers Family Band debut do a good job of sending the listener on a musical trip, even if they aren’t exactly stretching their imagination with titles like ‘Elle S. Dee’, ‘Mary Jane’ and 'Cosmic Wine'. Fans of solo Syd Barrett will have no trouble grooving along to ‘Moonberry Jelly Jam’, and the twelve-minute 'Jenny 3003' ends the album in ripping form, sliding from a narcoleptic start to a crunching climax. Fans of the Snakes, the Cuts, The Gris Gris and other modern-day psych-garage bands will find it well worth checking out
