Abrasive and confrontational vinyl-only third single from London-based grunge act, the Arrows of Love
Arrows of Love’s third (if I’m counting correctly) single is a bit of a divergence from their releases so far; it builds slowly, as opposed to the more direct, firm kick-up-the-backside grunge of their past singles, but the dark and menacing heart beating at the centre of the band and their work remains intact. ‘The Knife’ is like a short gothic drama played out between guitarists/vocalists Nima Teranchi and Lyndsey Critchley, both of whom claim to be holding the titular blade, and neither of whom you feel should be. Either way, you get the feeling it isn’t going to end well – unlike the song itself (top-notch segue, there), which explodes into an apoplectic, screaming finale of crashing drums, pumping bass and thrashing guitars. B-side ‘So Very Predictable’ is more of a Shellac-esque, angry screamer all the way through. Teranchi’s vocals carry an exasperated rage, which sounds as bored with the world as it is angry about it. It makes you believe that being furious is fun, and I love it. If you haven’t been keeping up with the band’s releases up until now, it’s time to get on board – their debut album is set to arrive some time this year, and if this new single is anything to go by you’ll want to be ready for it when it comes.
