intro
Uncategorisble, but excellent second album from Mercury Prize winner Ghostpoet, the nom de plume for British singer and producer Obaro Ejimiwe
Obaro Ejimiwe, the name behind the clever spitter that is Ghostpoet, releases his latest premium grade album. I can safely guarantee that if you have a passing acquaintance with bands, genres and labels such as Tricky, Portishead, Massive Attack, Dub Hop, Trip Hop, Sub Dub, Hip Hop or Ninja Tunes and Brownswood Records then you will be delighted with this album and its clever threads as it takes you on a cerebal journey like nothing else I have heard for a long time. It is partially the clever use of lyrics or the perfectly engineered tunes themselves that pulls you in, but then you have to consider also some of the talent he has guesting and its attraction. In 2011 Ghostpoet's first album 'Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam' was awarded a surprise Mercury Price nomination, thus making the sedate music world sit up and pay attention. That album was engineered in Obaro's bedroom, but this next album equates some of its growth and power from the fact it was studio made with the co-help of legendary producer Richard Formby (Darkstar,Wild Beasts). This album has a unique honesty in its vocal deliveries and also pays tribute to many of the dance and hop styles of today, moving from garage-like stabs and beats in the track 'Cold Win' to the many genres described above. When guest performances by Lucy Rose and Gwilym Gold on vocals for 'Dial Tones' and 'Dorsal Morsal' respectably and Tony Allen drumming on 'Plastic Bag Brain', this is a record of immense punch and quality. Look out for the next Mercury prize winner!
