intro
Stunning second album from Hurray for the Riff Raff, the project of New Orleans musician Alynda Lee Segarra, which, while providing no surprises, is totally affective and compelling
Alynda Lee Segarra's second album as Hurray for the Riff Raff, which was recorded in Nashville, brings no surprises, but instead proves a welcoming new round of more of the same. She sings with great conviction of the hardship her family has faced. This is country blues in the purest sense of the word as this heavy-headed gal portrays the life and times of blue collar America. Segarra's affective voice perfectly suits the redemptive nature of this album, while her wonderful little yodelling marks a stark contrast to the trail of tragic events that have affected her life from the Vietnam War to Hurricane Katrina. On 'Lake of Fire' (not the Meat Puppets classic song) a doowop ramshackle type of country music twang introduces a broader spectrum of sounds. Psycho blues with menacing guitar licks, and ye good ol' honkytonk with the tearing sounds from a steel guitar, almost turns the album into a round trip through Americana. Not avoiding but adapting the clichés, gentle veranda snare picking on the album's last song, 'Something's Wrong', melts with the sound of rain. As a matter of fact, nothing is wrong with this second album. 'Look Out Mama' puts its finger on many issues, both political and personal. That is perhaps a contradiction in terms perhaps, but at the very same time it provides pure joy in its music.
