intro
Enticing blend of blues, folk, hillbilly and brass on UK debut album from New Orleans-formed street musicians Hurray for the Riff Raff
From the melting pot of New Orleans appears Alynda Lee Segarra, who ran away from New York City at seventeen, and announces her return with "I've got the onward blues. They just won't let me be." Drenched in a good deal of melancholy, Alynda Lee Segarra's songs, however, have a fierce and melodic character. Tough and warm simultaneously, the album is pretty compelling all the way through. Hurray for the Riff Riff are competent and this stunning debut is quite intricate. Street musicians they may be, but their album sounds crisp and clear. From the many traditions in American music, it is a brew of blues, folk, hillbilly and brass. Her timbre recalls oddly Joan Armatrading. She sounds equally contemplative and soulful, but Miss Segarra lived it rough for a long time and the feeling filters through. The diverse instrumentation, the bohemian touch and the conviction in the performance make this album a big recommendation.
