intro
Fine latest album from Colorado-based experimental musician Josephine Foster, which, sung in Spanish and performed with the Victor Herrero Band, does not, however, quite match up to the her English language recordings
In recent months I have found myself become a huge fan of Josephine Foster's 2005 debut masterpiece 'Hazel Eyes, I Will Lead You'.' It is a liberating listen; the American folkstress’ fearless use of voice harks back to a time when Karen Dalton too tread the same path. It’s fair to say they don’t share the same tone but what they do share is what makes me love them all the more. They both put an original spin on what has gone before simply by opening their mouths. Unfortunately for myself listening to Fosters 2010 Spanish language album 'Anda Jaleo' was somewhat of a disappointment for me. I couldn’t connect; I simply put this down to the language barrier and have since found it only useful if I wanted to zone out whilst doing other tasks. 'Perlas' is definitely more of the same. Once again she is backed by the Victor Herrero Band and once again I find myself putting the CD on when I have guest round or I am reading a book. I cannot pinpoint to any favourite track although I can definitely say that 'En Esta Larga Ausencia' does grate on my nerves due to its bouncy structure. By the final track 'Brilliante Estrella' which translates as' Bright Star' all is right with the world as this two minute wonderment of a tune harks back to her earliest recordings and once again I can be swept up by her truly majestic voice. So whilst this album is no game changer it leaves me with hope that if Josephine decides to drop the Spanish flavour of her recent work I will still love listening to her. There has been no crime committed here and I will definitely listen to this again. It just can’t hold my attention like that initial Foster record does.
