Perfect new EP, their first in a new line-up, from New York-based shoegazing group, A Place To Bury Strangers
New York-based shoegazing group A Place to Bury Strangers remain completely fresh to my ears. While they are no longer on Mute Records and have lost their Welsh born bass player Jono Mofo who has been replaced by former D4 member, Dion Lunadon, reviews are still saying the same old shit about this band and that they are the loudest group you will have ever heard other than maybe My Bloody Valentine. I'm not going to go there as 'Onwards to the Wall', their first with Dion, seems totally fresh to me. 'I Lost You' opens this EP, and, like a lot of my recent and favourite records/CDs , it did what I expected it to do as it allowed me to in love with them again. 'I Lost You' is bass heavy, sounding like the soundtrack to horror flick, 'Driller Killer', while the vocals by Oliver Ackermann melt perfectly into the mix of savage and gritty guitars that feedback into their soundtrack of your mind. It is blissful and absolutely perfect. 'So Far Away' is a heavy, moody number that is like a psychedelic trip with a lush nugaze coating. The title track is sung as a duet with Alanna Nuala. This has more of a new wave feel, and is like an early post punk number, featuring killer Joy Division-like bass lines that Peter Hook would be proud of. 'Nothing Will Surprise Me' returns to the band's roots, and has a Gothic edge. 'Drill It Up' ends the EP, and is a slowly-played dirge piece that is reminiscent of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, but as if the band were playing on a freshly sharpened knife edge. Perfect!
