intro
Unusual and fresh-sounding alternative rock on third single from London-based band, Evans the Death
'Telling Lies' is the third single from Evans the Death. The band who compare themselves to artists ranging from Jarvis Cocker to the Pixies to the recently departed Whitney Houston, and promise to deliver a "necessary wake-up call with this take of self inflated egos and bizaRre lies." Vocalist Katherine Whitaker puts me in mind of a younger Chrissie Hynde crossed with Florence Welch. 'Telling Lies' lasts a mere 2 minutes and 33 seconds but feels exactly the right length. I tried to resist the urge to describe it as sounding similar to a Pixies, Idlewild and Belle and Sebastian mash up, but it does. Jangly poppy guitars mix with a dirtier rock and roll riff before crashing to an end in the discordant wail of 'alt' guitars. Evans The Death manage to avoid sounding derivative though because, although they combine elements of all the above, the result sounds new and fresh. The second track on the single is an original version of album track 'Morning Voice'. A track that now sounds very different, this original recording illustrates how far the band have come since their first incarnation as a folk, acoustic duo. A definite grower. The debut album is out in April.
