intro
Relaxed, but hypnotic and compelling second album from New Jersey-based indie pop trio, Real Estate
A couple of weeks back I was browsing in a record shop when the staff put on some music which very quickly began to worm it’s way into my brain with its mixture of Marr-like guitar work and pleasant melodies. The CD turned out to be the new album by Real Estate. A week later and I’m listening to the CD in my car having been given the chance to review it and I am taken by the relaxed, almost hypnotic collection of songs that make up 'Days', the second album by this excellent New Jersey trio. 'Green Aisles' really could have appeared on the Smiths' debut, if the vocals had been handled by either Bob Wratten from the Field Mice or Ian Masters of the Pale Saints, such is the sharp jangling guitar work. While current single 'It’s Real' has an uplifting quality that almost moves them into anthemic Arcade Fire territory. Infectious instrumental, 'Kinder Blumen', gives a feeling of happily bobbing around on a li-lo in the Med while the sun gently warms the skin. It really is one of those rare occasions when vocals may well have detracted from the beauty of the song. It is easy to see why 'Out Of Tune' has already been released as a single. It’s immediate and catchy, but such is the impressive strength of the album that it is no more than an equal with the other nine tracks. Final track 'All The Same' is a wonderful ending with circa seven minutes of hook-laden pop perfection. A couple of years ago the music press were all over the Drums, a band who openly talked of their love for the Field Mice and similar Sarah Records label bands, but in truth their album didn’t quite deliver. What they really needed were the blueprints for 'Days' and they would have put down a serious musical marker. Even in these tense economic times, there are most certainly rewards to be reaped by investing in Real Estate. Don’t miss the boat.
