intro
Fantastic indie/folk-pop on latest album from experimental Canadian collective, Snowblink
Don’t let their awful name put you off – Snowblink are a very good band. Currently a duo comprised of Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman, Snowblink occasionally feature MGMT, Nat Baldwin of Dirty Projectors and Frank Lyon from Keepaway. They’ve also collaborated with fellow Canadians the Hidden Cameras and Broken Social Scene. Sonically, Snowblink are somewhere in between St Vincent, and the Acorn, with a smidgeon of ‘Sung Tongs’ era Animal Collective. It’s indie/folk-pop augmented by some more left-field arrangements and rhythms, basically. There is also a little of Joni Mitchell in ‘Green to Gone’ and a bit of Feist in songs such as ‘Ambergris’ and ‘The Tired Bees’. Opener ‘Rut & Nuzzle’ with its picked guitar, wet echo effects, rustling hippy percussion and sweet harmonies, is a nice summation of the elements of Snowblink’s sound. Elsewhere, they go more folky, on ‘Bulb, For Later’ and the waltz of ‘Sea Change’, more arty indie on ‘Heckling the Afterglow’, and a little more poppy on ‘Go Deep (Fon Frank)’ and ‘Fish of Little Thoughts’. The album pulls these styles together with its fairly minimalist arrangements, use of ambient noise, and combination of hippyish naivety and sophisticated lyrical imagery.
