Fabienne Delsol - On My Mind
Label: Damaged Goods
Format: CD

intro

Excellent third album of 60's-influenced pop from French-born, but now London-based singer, Fabienne Delsol

Fabienne Delsol is a performer who has found her niche from the word go. Following a stint with the Bristols, the Limoges-born singer has embarked on a solo career blending French pop in the style of Serge Gainsbourg’s paramours with the Brit-beat sounds beloved by the circle of musicians gathered around her husband Liam Watson’s Toe Rag Studio. Listeners who thrilled to Delsol’s coo and pout so fetchingly on previous albums ‘Between You and Me’ and ‘No Time For Sorrows’ will be glad to hear the formula remains unchanged on her third album, ‘On My Mind’. What has changed, at least from 2007’s ‘Between You and Me’ is that half of the album is given over to originals penned by band member Thomas Gardner. Starting with ‘To You’, Delsol’s sweet voice floats out over some heavily thumping drums and a pleasing dose of guitar fuzz. There are two songs in Delsol’s native tongue - a cover of Les Problemes ‘Pas Adieu’ and French ye-ye chanteuse Sylvie Vartan’s ‘Ce Jour La’, along with a ‘Strange Shadows’, a tune favoured by Francoise Hardy. Tunes like Joe Meek’s ‘Ragunboneman’ and ‘I Feel So Blue’ (made famous by Hank Ballard and The Midnighters) should satisfy fans of her R&B side. She also revisits her Bristols hit ‘And I Have Learnt to Dream’ - a song always worth another go-round. Fans of Fabienne Delsol’s previous work will be just as delighted by album No. 3, and newcomers to the 60s pop sound could find a far worse place to start.
