intro
Intriguing tribute covers collection on the Sonic Cathedral label to psychedelic pioneers Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators
This tribute covers collection focuses on the career of 13th Floor Elevators founder Roky Erickson. Erickson with his compadres invented the whole genre of psychedelic/trippy music fuelled by copious amounts of mind-bending hallucinogenic substances, which is clearly evident from this record which features Roky himself (backed by the Black Angels) in a live rendition of 'Roller Coaster'. This track sets the pace for the record and makes an impressive opener. Sonic Cathedral have issued this on CD, download and in an especially clever marketing ploy on limited yellow vinyl, complete with a blot (art) print. Australia's the Strange Attractors take on 'Reverberation' is a serious contender for the pick of the bunch. Another impressive highlight is 'You Don't Love Me Yet' which finds Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3 fame teaming up with New York's Cheval Sombre. Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine also makes an appearance on London-based band Le Volume Courbe's version of 'I Love the Living You' The press release claims that Texas-born Erickson "as a chemically charged member of the 13th Floor elevators for daring to create a new musical genre was incarcerated in a maximum security for the criminally insane." What they forgot to mention is that Roky himself pled insanity having been caught in possession of Marijuana and laterally spent more time in a sanitorium no doubt for daring to inspire the Dead Kenned's to pen the track 'Stealing People's Mail'. Erickson is apparently now fine, has passed his driving test and drives a Volvo. This is an intriguing collection of thirteen tracks which is well worth having in your collection. All artists royalties will be donated to the Roky Erickson Trust
