intro

Ambient and reflective sixth album from Eluvium, the project of Portland, Oregon-based musician Matthew Cooper

Matthew Cooper has been on a break from recording as Eluvium following the release of his brilliant and evocative work on ‘Copia’ in 2007, touring with acts such as Explosions in the Sky. His return with ‘Similes’ marks an important departure from his texture-driven, ambient work with the inclusion of vocals and percussive loops. That doesn’t mean Cooper has turned into the next Stephen Merritt - though he does have a sonorous, moody voice. The ticks and clicks are less about providing a rhythmic backing than an extra sonic element to interweave with his drones, keyboards and classical guitar motifs. There are still a few wordless pieces, such as the rippling piano work ‘In Culmination’ but even the songs with lyrics - usually enigmatic of meaning -‘Similes’ songs are more about evoking a mood of calm reflection. The final effect is much like that of the music of New Zealand guitarist Roy Montgomery.
