intro
Ultimately optimistic folk pop on highly impressive concept album from Canadian singer-songwriters, Carolyn Mark and NQ Arbuckle
Not from Memphis, Tennessee but recorded in Toronto, Canada comes the appropriately named 'Let's Just Stay Here' album, filled with twang twisters... meaning the kind of post-C&W and experimental music which tends to derail on other more pretentious albums. Twisted twang still doesn't know an official name and, for better or worse a term, this will have to do, describing the case of a couple lucky in love and in music, who aspire to step aside from the trodden path. No matter how lucky they were when they left off .. Rooted in Vancouver soil, one wintry day, Mrs. Mark and Mr. Arbuckle called for a move. It brought them to many places but 'Let's Just Stay Here' most of all is an open invitation to enjoy Canadian folk music as it is, in spite of all its tree-chopping, ice-breaking machineries and ridiculous pop music and art subventions. It's just one single line, yet the wisest you'll hear for decades, "how can the second time be an accident?" that aptly sums up our ongoing longing for adventure. I'm easily convinced by 'Let's Just Stay Here'; as it's an album with such a wealth of quality folk pop, riddled with fancy tunes and full of deeper meanings in nearly worn-out yet still effective clichés. The 'Itchy Feet' track suddenly brings on a mellotron drum computer to help out on my initial reservations about a set of such stubborn authenticity. Even when it meant moving away from the Pacific West Coast with, at the very end pet dogs barking over a studio recording, this Mint release found a resting place in the country's own sense of nothingness. Mrs. Mark and Mr. Arbuckle agreed on this grand place to live happily afterwards, which is celebrated in their majestic picking and plucking. Carolyn Mark and NQ Arbuckle do little else than to advocate their happiness over the course of a dozen tracks. They wanted to be here; so let them stay here.
