intro
Outstanding covers album from Scottish folk artist James Yorkston and the Big Eyes Family Players, the project of Sheffield-based musician James Green, which collects together both some of the traditional and the skiffle songs that have inspired them
Having found common ground at very long last, James Yorkston is accompanied by Big Eyes on the finest effort yet for them both. This selection of traditional songs shows the inspirational music that the two James(their respective surnames are Yorkston and Green) discovered that they shared. The renditions come with such conviction and with such an ease that this album is dangerously close to being a coming together of two like-minded people who brought along their respective curricula vitae, and realized, gosh, we've nearly got the same here, haven't we? The classic tunes that this temporary duo recorded, include sidesteps to skiffle and to the British roots of rock'n roll. 'Mary Connaught and James O'Donnell' typifies a genuine showcase of pre-rock'n' roll skiffle. The balladeer tradition on 'Folk Songs' then is equally honoured with a cover of 'Thorneymoor Woods' The instant sing-along quality, assuming that yoo know most of these folk songs, can not and should not be allowed to get in the way of enjoying these perfect renditions. 'Folk Songs' never was intended to be a big budget cover songs campaign and 'by accident' the two James have recorded an album they ought to tell their grandchildren about.
