intro
Classy collection of botgh well-known and more obscure 80's electronica, compiled together by music journalist and author of 'England's Dreaming' Jon Savage
Surely no one can have anything bad to say about a compilation that opens with the 12” version of Yazoo’s ‘Situation’? Followed by the powerful vocals and funky rhythms of ‘Weekend’ by Class Action ? Surely not. Oh, you do ? Well, you’re an idiot. I love this kind of retrospective collection, partly because the music tends to be brilliant (certainly a lot better than any of the turgid audio refuse you get playing in clubs across the land today), but mainly because groups back in the day really knew how to name themselves. You can’t say fairer than a cheesey vocal sampled on a Casio keyboard when it’s produced by a group called Janice (actually, that track is probably one of the weaker on the record, if not just for it’s confusing and entirely misplaced reworking of the Addams Family theme halfway through). There’s a good hour’s worth of pure class on this album, from Debbie Deb to Pamela Joy, Dhar Braxton to the Latin Rascals. Even though I was only actually alive for one of the years covered by this album, it still manages to dredge up nostalgic feelings for me; every now and then a track chirps with a sound that makes me think of Gun Star Heroes on the Sega Megadrive, or a 1989 episode of 'Top of the Pops'. Ah, simpler times. This album is destined to be the soundtrack of house parties across the land – post-3am, when most people have already gone to bed, but two or three drunk men soldier on into the early morning, dancing themselves into an ugly, sweaty embarrassment. “Tonight it’s party time, it’s party time tonight!”
