intro
Alluring and unique folk rock on new album from Gregory and the Hawk, the project of New York-based singer songwriter Meredith Godreau
'Moenie and Kitchi' is Meredith Godreau's first release with Fat Cat records. She recorded the album with Mike McGuire, Susan Ambrose and Adam Pierce, who also produced the album. But the band's official line up seems to be Godreau singing vocals, Adam Christgau on drums, Doro Tachler on violin and bass, and McGuire on guitar. The album is a gentle walk through a yellow corn field. Godreau has a soft folky voice that has something different about it, but it's hard to identify what. She weaves each song with an innocent and almost naive quality, but the lyrics are poetic and not naive at all. The album is very consistent with every song bringing its own texture to the album. 'Wild West' is a favorite with a sweeping and very 'hum-able' tune. 'Stonewall, Stone Fence' has an eerie feel to it and lends itself to Godreau's voice perfectly. The drums become heavier in this track but it never looses its feather-like lightness. Closing track, 'Two Faced Twin', rounds the album off nicely. It skips along and leaves you wanting more at less than three minutes long. This album is a nice change from other 'singer / songwriter' set ups. While the influences such as Aimee Mann and Mazzy Star can be heard, Godreau has managed to create an album which is very much her own and has a carefree alluring charm.
