intro

Pop-influenced, somewhat more commercial-sounding third album from abrasive lo-fi rockers, the Kills

‘Midnight Boom’ is the third album for the Kills. Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart return to dish out more rock ‘n’ roll tales for their now increased following, since Jamie started dating Kate Moss. It kicks off with the first two singles. ‘U.R.A.Fever’ is sleazy rock ‘n’ roll in its rawest form, and is basic and to the point. It is is followed by ‘Cheap and Cheerful’, which has a very limited drum machine backing to it and upon which Alison sounds like a sexy Shirley Manson from Garbage. ‘Getting Down’ sounds like a lo-fi version of the Cure's ‘A Forest’, and, sung by Jamie, soon has you tapping your feet to it before you even have a chance to think about it. ‘Last Day of Magic’ is more primitive and more rocking in feel, while ‘Hook and Line’ is sexy and sleazy, and sung by Alison is a sing-a-long number in the style of Patti Smith. ‘Black Balloon’ is more mellow, one to go to the bar too if seeing the band live. ‘M.E.X.I.C.O.’ is another lo-fi track and sounds like the Stooges before becoming more poppy flavoured. ‘Sour Cherry’ is poppy and sounds lovely. ‘Alphabet Pony’ is very new wave, again recalling Patti Smith. ‘What New York Used to Be Like’ is a tame but pleasant affair, while ‘Goodnight Bad Morning’, which ends this short album, comes over like an acoustic Velvet Underground and is very mellow indeed.
