intro
Fine electronic dance music on debut album from Let's Go Outside, the project of Portland, Oregon-based musician Stephen Schieberl
I suppose I'll appear as Señor Grumpy when I write that I don't like be told to go outside. I'm a cyclist and a dogwalker, thank you. So from this moment on, I'll refer to this 'Picnic With the Hunters' as the debut album from LGO - it follows nicely on from LFO, doesn't it, after all? LGO play subdued electronic dance music. It takes the genre one step further beyond dubstep by cutting out chunks of the dubstep riddim and then letting the riddim resurface, almost at random it seems. The end result thus becomes a little spooky and sketchy. LGO's basic method is to mix and blend electronica, or clicks and cuts as they used to be called in the previous century, with urban instrumental dance music called dubstep. The range of LGO's influences stretches from acid house music to industrial techno yet always, these serve as influences, not as examples. Coded messages repeated throughout these hypnotic compositions, and genuine vocals on two of the album's tracks, do build a storyline, to be furtherly refined though. Bubbling up and splashing about as if it's springtime already, Picnic With the Hunters' includes spicy sparkles and slick sidesteps. It is most likely to be an album that will get plundered by the remix slaves. So rich of ideas, this debut album will keep oh so many busy.
