intro
Compelling industrial rock on the latest in Fire Records 10 inch occasional series, a split single which features Australian trio HTRK and London-based experimentalist Duke Garwood
HTRK’s side begins with lunkheaded industrial crunch. Like HTRK’s ‘Nostalgia’ it sounds like it was recorded in a huge deserted industrial space. The Melbourne-by-way-of-Berlin trio makes a sudden shift to a less crunchy noise but continue to conjure the sound of desolation with wordless moans, drilling feedback and a pulsing bass. If Einsturzende Neubaten tried to cover the Dead C (or vice-versa) it might sound similar to ‘K, Ksext, Erghh’. The half of the 10-inch devoted to Duke Garwood is less compelling, though his track segues remarkably well when the two tracks are played in rapid succession. ‘Hodiddy’ seems to be more heavily deconstructed than most of the Brixton bluesman’s work. At times it heads into Jandek territory, with a heavily strummed guitar lapsing into feedback as Garwood moans the lyrics from somewhere in the sonic murk.
