intro
Superb reissue on Domino Records of Young Marble Giants' seminal only album , which comes with a whole extra CD of tracks
Well, what can I write about this fantastic album that hasn’t already been said a thousand times? I can say that this is the third re-release of Young Marble Giants’ sole album on CD, following Belgian label Les Disques du Crepescule and US label Play It Again Sam’s releases back in 1994 and 2003. Those two discs had the same bonus tracks – the 'Testcard' EP and the 'Final Day' single plus a compilation track as well – but this new 2 disc release from Domino has more than that! In addition to these 25 tracks, they have decided to include the 'Salad Days' compilation, released by Vinyl Japan seven years ago, a CD that included 15 demos from the band’s early days and outtakes from the 'Colossal Youth" sessions, a real treasure for fans of the band, like me. And, if this wasn’t enough, you can also get the limited edition version and get an additional CD, containing the five Peel session tracks recorded in 1980, previously only available on a deleted CD from 1991. A lot of boring information there... But as I said in the beginning of this review, what else can I tell you ? This is one of the best albums ever. Even Kurt Cobain thought so, and when I listen to it today it’s still as brilliant as when the first time I heard it, more than seven years ago. And the demos are really interesting too, as they show the songs in their earliest incarnations, often a bit slower than on the album, and with an even simpler sound, if that’s possible. If you have the slightest interest in the history of indiepop, or post punk, this is the album for you. And now it’s available in the shops again! Thanks Domino!
