intro
Commanding and clever first single from their second album for the Editors
'Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors' is the first single and first track from the Editors' second album 'An End Has a Start' It opens with big drums and Tom Smith still on vocals but now he is playing the piano as well. Tom's vocal is commanding, crystal clean and as dark as ever. If anything this track sounds like a much superior Coldplay. It has some very clever progression and is backed by a choir at its end. The B side of the CDS is 'An Eye for An Eye' which is a Gothic number and also has an element of Joy Division. Tom's vocal is very sinister and, as is often the case with the Editors, this track is too damn good to be a mere B side. There are two 7 inch versions. The B side on the first of the 7 inches, which appears in black vinyl, is 'Some Kind of Spark'. It has an uneven feel, sounding like a distorted Coldplay with the musical assistance of Joy Division and the Pixies, and is very doomy. The B side of the second 7 inch, which is on clear vinyl, is 'The Picture'. It sounds like a doomy the Cure. Tom's vocal grabs your attention, recalling Paul Banks from Interpol, and it is a song to sway your lighters in the air too.
