intro
First single from their third album for the Editors, which finds them moving successfully in a new keyboards-dominated direction
‘Papillon’ is the first single from ‘In This Light and On This Evening’, the third album from the Editors which finds the band having changed their direction and gone for a keyboard based sound. ‘Papillon’ for those old enough to be there was the prison-based memoir of French former convict Henri Charriere and was also made into a 1973 film starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. The Editors pays tribute to both the book and film and to the early 80s as well, as while before their sound was very Joy Division-influenced, it is now reminiscent of New Order on downers as well. Its sound is very much keyboards-based which is a very brave move for the band. While the A side plays at 33 rpm. The B side, a demo of a track from the album, ‘Eat Raw Meat=Blood Droll’ plays at the usual 45 rpm. From the start it is very doom-laden and melancholic, but it also has a touch of gospel to it and sounds very much influenced by the last band they went on tour with, the now three piece REM.
