Pissed Jeans - Hope for Men

Pissed Jeans have already made a name for themselves with their squalling punk blurt. The band’s forefathers are bands like Flipper and the Germs, but like contemporaries Fucked Up and Brutal Knights they combine their ugly noise – like the Melvins at their crudest - with lyrics that suggest a sneaking intellect behind the demented howls. The lead track sounds like the Scientists after a bad glue binge. There’s a crash of reverb, the guitars roll in with a horrible squeal and vocalist Matt Korvette starts chewing on the microphone while the rhythm section keeps up a brain-dead beat. The song’s title is ‘People Person’, but it sounds more like an angry drunk beating on your front door at 3 in the morning. Tangled wire guitar coils itself around Corvette’s inchoate rants on ‘Secret Admirer’, another tune that likes you a lot more than you like it. The band has the smarts to change things up a few songs in with ‘Scrapbooking’, which lets Korvette perform in creep mode while the bass thrums very quietly behind him and a piano chimes in the distance. After that it’s back to the kind of noise you can imagine the New Bomb Turks making if they were drunk (okay, drunker). The only fly in the ointment is that for all of the bands paeans to unlovable loserdom, it seems the members are actually functional, gainfully employed members of society!!! The infamy!!! Fans of the aforementioned punks and lunks may want to lend an ear to Pissed Jeans’ brutalist yowl. Just be warned, there don’t seem to be any Darby Crashs or Will Shatters in this crew. They just sound like it.
