Flawed, but promising debut album from shambling San Francisco-based indie rock quartet, Trainwreck Riders
Firstly, it has to be said, Trainwreck Riders is a great name for a band. The debut album by this San Franciso quartet also has appealing artwork so the initial signs were encouraging. Anticipating a more rootsy / alt. country affair, while a tad disappointed to find that wasn’t really the case, their shambling indie rock, slightly roots-tinged material does offer a modicum of appeal. Conveying some chemistry, over the long haul though the songs lack strong enough hooks, truly memorable lines or the kind of outstanding performances to elevate them beyond the burgeoning crowd. That said old Pavement or Archers Of Loaf fans missing their idiosyncrasies and perhaps suppressing a subconscious desire for something more rustically flavoured could do worse than check them out. For all my reservations, I suspect once they’ve clocked up a few more miles on the tracks they’ll potentially me a more interesting prospect.
