intro
Soft and melancholic indiepop on fourth album from Australian duo Sodastream, which, while enjoyable, has few real surprises
When I first heard Australian duo Sodastream’s first album 'Looks Like A Russian' six years ago, I loved every minute of it. Karl Smith’s sweet voice was a perfect compliment to the soft and melancholic music he created together with his band mate Pete Cohen. Then a year later in 2001, they released the follow-up, 'The Hill for Company', and, when I listened to it I realized that it sounded exactly like the debut album. Since then, I haven’t really bothered to check out their following releases, even though I did finally buy their 2003 third and most recent studio album, 'A Minor Revival', last year in a second hand shop and discovered that it was pretty good, especially the song 'Blinky', which is probably one of the best songs they have ever recorded. Well, I guess I don’t have to tell you that my expectations on their latest album, 'Reservations', which follows on from 'Take Me With Your When You Go', a seven track EP which came out last year, weren’t too high, which probably was a good thing. Since I haven’t been listening to Karl and Pete for quite a while now, it was a joyful reunion, and I instantly enjoyed the few midtempo songs on the record, 'Twin Lakes' and the title track 'Reservations'. But then after a while, I came to the same conclusion as I did back in 2001, when the second album was released: if you have one Sodastream album, you have them all. That being said, I enjoyed listening to the new songs too, so, if you like their older works, maybe you should check this out!
