intro
Rock god extraordinaire Jesse Hughes recently brought his Eagles of Death Metal to London. Daniel Cressey is transfixed at their show there at the Carling Academy
Rock god extraordinaire Jesse Hughes has brought his Eagles of Death Metal to London to show us that you can still have fun with rock and roll. From seconds after they come on stage until they leave the Academy is transformed into a riotous party. With a host of songs that should be classics in their repertoire the Eagles of Death Metal have the crowd in the palm of their hands. Big riffs, big choruses, and classic subject matter infuse everything blasted out from the stage tonight. Songs singing the praises of dancing the night away, 19 year old girls and low down sex have rarely been done better. Banter with the crowd, guitar solos, sing-a-long choruses, high pitched singing. It’s not by numbers – it’s the concentrated essence of everything that made you fall in love with this music in the first place. At the end of the day they may not be a truly great band. Their songs may boarder on the idiotic but they know how to rock a show better than just about anyone. As the band thrash out ‘Brown Sugar’ it is clear the spirit of the Stones is alive and well. Rock and roll is not dead – I’ve seen the proof this night.
