intro
Spooky garage-blues on debut album from Lion Fever, which will appeal to fans of bands like Black Cat Music, Come and the Gun Club
Having never heard of Lion Fever, I was immediately struck by how much the band’s singer sounds like a female version of the Starlite Desperation/Lost Kids’ Dante Adrian (a.k.a. Dante White). After perusing the liners I note that the moaning howl in question belongs to Lost Kids’ Jennifer Pearl and Adrian wrote one of the songs, 'Crowd Pleaser'. That’s that explained, then … The band was apparently formed in conjunction with VSS/Slaves/Pleasure Forever drummer David Clifford, and though he’s gone the driving percussive dirge of his other bands seems to have remained in drummer Jason LaVeris’ hands. Casey Geisen provides some moody piano (which goes a long way to providing the band with a signature sound), Abrahm Jay Torres rounds out the band on bass. Although it’s likely just coincidence, the wah frenzy of 'She Sleeps' wouldn’t be out of place on a Dead Meadow album and some of the other off-kilter guitar squawks would fit comfortably in a number of Dirtbombs tunes. 'Haunted Water' is definitely recommended for fans of the aforementioned bands, as well as outfits like Black Cat Music, Come, the Gun Club (who they covered on their debut EP) and anyone who likes their garage-blues spooky and strange.
