Debut album from the much hyped Kaiser Chiefs, which proves "to be little more than a re-hash of Brit Pop vaguery, akin to Menswear at their very weakest"
Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated? The fog of hype surrounding the Kaiser Chiefs has clearly clouded the judgement of certain music magazines. What was promised as a serious contender for album of the year (or at the very least one for the Christmas roundups) has turned out to be little more than a re-hash of Brit Pop vaguery, akin to Menswear at their very weakest. With stunning debuts from emerging bands like the Bloc Party and the Futureheads, this pasty faced Leeds quintet seem out of step with this damp squib of a record. Tracks like the opener ‘Everyday I Love You Less And Less’ set the tone for a series of overblown and undernourished keyboard outings, topped off with frontman Ricky Wilson’s tedious pseudo-croon. 'Employment' is not all bad though, the floor filling indie groove of ‘Oh My God’ is an obvious highlight as is the first major label single ‘I Predict A Riot,’ where Wilson’s sardonic vocals achieve the desired Jarvis Cocker-isms of ‘us and them.’ The Kaiser Chiefs almost have everything, a ride on the all conquering Brit-Rock band wagon, the hyperbole of the press and a witty art school front man. All they need now are some tunes.
