intro

Fast, furious and loud, new London group the Mighty Roars have all the landmarks of a great punk band. Dave Toynton enjoys "their set of hard, raunchy, ecstatic punk rock" at the Archway in London

This is one combustible band. They are fast! furious! And loud! These are all the landmarks of a great punk band, In their stage presence, the Mighty Roars have all the authenticity of one of the original punk band of the 70's. The Mighty Roars consists of Mark Spiegel (drums), Martin Pilkington (guitar) Dave Pringuer (bass) and Lara Granquist (rhythm guitar and lead vocals). Mark and Martin wore the stereotypical hair styles of the late 70s. They also wore white shirts and jeans. Their shirt sleeves were folded at the wrists invoking memories and images of new wave punk bands from that era like the Lurkers, Eddie and the Hot Rods and the Motors. Dave reminded me of Lurkers guitarist, Pete Stride, with his long shoulder length hair, white dinner jacket, jeans and white shoes and tie. Lara meanwhile wore white high heels and a orange mini skirt, bringing back visions of the likes of Faye Fife from the Rezillos and the Mod-ettes, all of whom used to wear these types of dresses. Vocally Lara, however, is out on her own. I can’t think of one artist that comes totally to mind, although you could hear the influence of Joan Jett, PJ Harvey, Janis Joplin and Patti Smith in her singing The Mighty Roars were the second band on, and played about a 30 mins set of hard, raunchy, ecstatic punk rock which I thought was fantastic. From time to time Dave, Martin and Lara would all share main vocals, something you don’t see a lot of. For me the set ended to soon and left me wanting more. I was not the only one! Others were cheering for more, but this privilege was sadly left for the headlining act alone.
