intro
Promising funky guitar rock on debut single from new Michigan-based project, which includes an unusual cover version of the Electric Six's 'Gay Bar'
The Detroit City Council are one of the newest bands on London based label Acid Jazz. Their debut single ‘Party Planet Rising’ sets them off to a promising start. The first song ‘Party Planet Rising’ has slightly funky sound but with clear rocky edges that are very easy to follow on the first listen. The great strength of the band, which comes across in the song, lies in their guitars which give the music a lot of texture. The middle track ‘Ass Struggle’ reminds me of some kind of beach party. A lot of sunshine, and people dancing around with full glasses in their hands. Its repetitive rhythm and chorus of joyful singers, however, becomes monotonous. The single closes with a cover version of the Electric Six's ‘Gay Bar’ .The Detroit City Council perform a stripped down version of the song and, while it can be a big risk to attempt such a well-known cover as this, they have managed to pull something unique out of it. Over all, ‘Party Planet Rising’ and the Detroit City Council have a lot going for them. It seems the band are still testing their sound out, but the potential is there and the band have certainly plenty to offer.
