Chronics - Make You Move
Label: Bad Afro
Format: CD

intro

Enjoyable and energetic, but "by-the-book" second album from latest Scandinavian garage rock imports, the Chronics

You can hardly turn around in the record store without bumping into a Scandinavian garage rock band these days, and here’s another one. Soundwise, the Chronics are close to the excellent Flaming Sideburns (on White Jazz). On the plus side, they obviously have skill and energy; singer Magnus Rudolfsson has a good raspy voice and can hold a tune, while guitarist Leif Jakkobson, bassist  Micke Ogren and drummer Mats Westin provide a solid musical floor. The band also tries to keep things varied, but ... there’s an ever-so-slight shortage of “oompf” on this CD — on too many tracks it seems like the band is just about to take off — then they head back to the riff and lyric they were working over. If the Chronics want to '“Make You Move', they might think about spinning albums by label-mates the Royal Beat Conspiracy, who perfectly demonstrated how to liven up a well-worn genre by aiming for the dancefloor.  It’s engaging enough while you’re listening too it, but if you remember any of the hooks, it’s probably because you heard them somewhere else. The exception is final track, 'Tomorrow’s News', which adds some much-needed flavour with an amped-up rockabilly feel. Other than that, this is for genre fans only; not bad, just too by-the-book.
