Sit 'n' Spin is a rather strange name for a band, especially this one. After glancing at the picture of the four band members on the sleeve posing with guitars and pointing them like guns, I put 'Enjoy the Ride' into my CD player expecting a coarse NY punky riot grrl type of thing. But there was no sign of the "I hate men" noise of Sleater Kinney or the angry sound that I expected. Sit 'n' Spin instead combine Chuck Berry influenced guitar playing with old fashioned "I want my man" country type words. What they do though, they do well. Their songs don't tend to take themselves over-seriously, and the whole album is fun and also full of good-humoured stories. The strange thing is that all the songs seem to be about chasing men. There is no angry feminism here. No - Sit 'n' Spin, despite their "up yours" name, seem content in singy quirky songs about chasing young lads around, stealing them from others, and getting them drunk. The whole album is very melodic, and with lots of "oooooh yeaaah" and "alllrieeegghht" noises and even a microphone echo being used on a lot of tracks, it has a classic rock 'n' roll feel. It's all very classily done, the sort of thing you can imagine them playing in the diners in Grease. Though this album is nothing like I expected, I can see why a lot of people would like it. It's happy, and not thickly laid on - you can listen to this without having to feel depressed. It's even uplifting, especially if you find stories about boys funny. Note that I use the term "boys" and not men - this is very along the Hefner unwritten rule of not growing up. It's stories about being a teenager even when you get to your thirties. "Little teenage boy I wanna take you home with me" the singer bounces at one point, and follows this quickly with a line about how he doesn't have to shave more than once a week. If you are a fan of either quirky pop or girls playing guitars, Sit 'n' Spin are for you. They're obviously having the time of their lives, and it sounds great. Indeed, enjoy the ride !
