Formed in 1996, The Verna Cannon hail from Columbia, South Carolina. 'Movie Star Faces' is the band's second album and follows their debut, released in 1998. Musically The Verna Cannon explore predominantly sparse musical terrain. The most distinctive facets of the band are the mournful violin playing of their classically trained leader, Dan Cook (apparently a former Washington DC punk rocker) and the hushed, almost spoken vocals of singer Molly Ledford, which are occasionally reminiscent of, but not quite as haunting as, those of Mimi Parker of Low. Whilst ‘Movie Star Faces’ certainly has its appealing moments, ‘Nice Cup Of Tea’ for instance demonstrates a quirky sense of humour; “Had no time for castles, gardens, suits of armour, but a nice cup of tea was served to me in a music store in Camden High Street where I played someone a song”, on the whole the songs are indistinctive and too similarly paced. Having said that though, it’s quite possibly a grower and for those seeking an album for times of solitude and reflection, The Verna Cannon’s ‘Movie Star Faces’ maybe the ideal candidate.
