Exuberant musical romp on third album from South African singer and rapper Moonchild Sanelly

South African singer and rapper Moonchild Sanelly, who has featured on albums by Beyonce and Gorillaz, has brought out her third album, 'Full Moon', following up on her 2022 album, ‘Phases’. Recorded in Malawi, the UK and Sweden, produced by Johan Hugo (Self Esteem, Lady Gaga, M.I.A.), the record is an exuberant, genre-defying mix of songs, moving seamlessly from high octane electronica to South African dance, with a nod to Sanelly’s experience as a spoken-word poet. Describing her music, which she terms ‘future ghetto funk’, Sanelly said: “I can make any genre, I have fun creating music because I’m not limited. Its club-ready beats oscillate between electronic, afro-punk, edgy-pop, kwaito, + hip-hop sensibilities”. Songs to listen out to in this twelve-track collection include: the playful opener and first single ‘Scrambled Eggs’; the self-affirming ‘Big Booty’, with its jocular references to David and Brooklyn Beckham, about embracing your body however it looks; ‘In My Kitchen’ with its hypnotic beat; break-up song ‘To Kill A Single Girl’ on the dangers to one’s love life of drinking tequila; feminist dance anthem ‘Do My Dance’; the emotive, piano-led ‘Falling’; the ballad ‘Mntanami’ (‘My Child’), “an apology letter from my father to myself, as well as a letter from my children’s father to them”; and the closer, the contemplative ‘I Was The Biggest Curse’ on the power of self-acceptance. With its colourful mix of storytelling, wordplay and sexual innuendo, ‘Full Moon’ is an assured album by a charismatic musician, coming out ahead of a UK and Ireland tour.
