intro
Evocative eighth album from Mley Cyrus, which splits itself between an energetic and optimistic first half and a more downbeat and melancholic second half
The latest album by the American singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus, her eighth, is replete with songs expressing vulnerability, counterpointed by pop songs of liberation. Envisaged by Cyrus as divided between AM and PM selections: “the morning time, where there’s a buzz and energy and there’s a potential of new possibilities” and the night, which “feels like there’s a slinky seediness and a kind of grime but a glamour at the same time”, ‘Endless Summer Vacation’ is marked by a mix of languor and frenetic rhythms. Songs to listen out for in this thirteen-track collection include: the opener, pop-disco, UK chart-topping single ‘Flowers’ with its addictive beat, a self-love anthem: “I can buy myself flowers/Write my name in the sand/Talk to myself for hours/…Yeah, I can love me better than you can”; the bittersweet reminiscences of an old affair in ‘Jaded’; a melodic duet with Brandi Carlile on country ballad ‘Thousand Miles’ with its harmonica base; the unsettling stream of consciousness ‘Handstand’, setting the scene for the second, darker, grittier part of this album, with its distorted vocals and unnerving lyrics: “electric eels and red venom”’; the upbeat, lascivious ‘River’; the catchy, electro-op ‘Violet Chemistry’; the synth-driven, passionate ‘Wildcard’; and the powerful, stripped-back piano ballad ‘Wonder Woman’, highlighting Cyrus’s ability to evoke a range of emotions. A musician known for her work spanning different genres, Cyrus, now 30, shows her ability in this new record to synthesize her previous musical forays into a fresh array of songs covering different emotional and sonic territory.
