intro
Anthemic and impressively powerful bewalbum from Welsh band Stereophonics released to coincide with the 25th anniversary of their debut LP
Originally Welsh band Stereophonics were intending to mark the 25th anniversary of their debut album 'Word Gets Around' with a second greatest hits collection. But then singer Kelly Jones discovered a cache of unfinished songs that had initially been intended for the band's 2019 album 'Kind'. At the time these compositions had been rejected because they didn't quite fit with the rather introspective feel of 'Kind'. But they are in familiar style to many past Stereophonics releases with a well proved template of crunchy, fuzztone guitars and anthemic choruses. All the songs bristle with energy and attitude and they will undoubtedly delight the vast majority of Stereophonics fans. Though Stereophonics broke through at the tail-end of Britpop, their music owes much to 1970s rock. 'Don't Know What Ya Got' is reminiscent of the Rolling Stones whilst acoustic number 'Seen That Look Before' has some of the throatiness of Rod Stewart whilst the nicely performed “Hanging On Your Hinges” draws on an affection for ZZ Top. There are traditional rock-style chords in 'Made A Mess Of Me' but there is enough originality (including a trumpet solo!) plus soulfulness here to keep 'Oochya!' interesting - and several tracks are delivered with truly impressive power.
