intro
Initially directionless and messy but ultimately compelling second album from New Zealand avant garde act, Orchestra of Spheres
Of all the new releases I’ve heard this month ‘Vibration Animal Sex Brain Music’ by New Zealand’s Orchestra of Spheres is definitely the most difficult to love. There is such a huge scattering of influences ranging from Riot Grrrl, indie, dance, funk, art rock and no wave that on a first listen you could easily find the whole thing quite directionless and messy. In fact all the above you would find in just one song, the bizarre ‘2,000,000 Years’. There is a touch of Chk Chk Chk to them, but the whole album seems less pretentious and far more, well… fun. Once the first few listens are out the way the album comes alive, reminding me in places of the fantastic 'Butter 08' LP that came out on Grand Royal back in the mid-90s. ‘Mind Over Might’ and ‘Bogan in the Forest’ could easily have found their way onto future Butter 08 releases had the band stuck together whereas ‘Journey’ would have fit on any mid-era Stereolab record if only the vocals were a little more delicate. Therein lies the problem. Although this album is solid enough and contains not one crappy moment, it’s a little too derivative of 90s experimental rock and dance but if you want to strip down to your pants and run around the kitchen fist pumping like I often do then ‘Vibration Animal Sex Brain Music’ is the perfect soundtrack for the act, time and time again.
