intro
Fabulous 60's and psychedelic-influenced latest album from melodic Detroit-raised, but now San Francisco-based singer-songwriter, Kelley Stoltz
Now on Jack White’s Third Man Records, Detroit’s one-man band Kelley Stoltz has released quite the album here. His previous records that were released on Sub Pop featured some fine moments, but were never able to carry that greatness throughout the whole thing. Here on ‘Double Exposure’ Stoltz has pretty much achieved a fluid album. From beginning to end there are no filler tunes and no moments of lo-fi experimentation to disrupt the album's unique sound and flow. Everything hinges on the album's extravagantly trippy centrepiece ‘Inside My Head’; during this nine minute monster you will find all the ingredients that permeate throughout the album's other tracks. Key is Kelley’s intricate knowledge of what makes a great hook; he will often use the bass guitar to pull a melody along or a reel the tape backwards much like the Stone Roses did on their 1989 debut in order to complete the full sonic range of his songs. Elsewhere the title track and album closer ‘It’s Summertime Again’ would both rank among the greatest songs the man has penned, the distant melancholy that runs through the latter in particular takes the stand-out moments from Beck's ‘Sea Change’ album and compresses them into one beautiful finale.
