intro
Lo-fi, but sunny-sounding indie rock from recent Sub Pop signing Kelley Stoltz
Kelley Stoltz’s move to Sub Pop last year has got him a lot more press attention. His third album (if you don’t count his re-working of Echo and the Bunnymen’s ‘Crocodiles’) ‘Below the Branches’ received rave reviews in several high profile magazines. Now, he has released a mini-album, ‘The Sun Comes Through’, literally months after ‘…Branches’. Typical of Stoltz, the songs are a bit lo-fi, but they’re also layered, sophisticated pop tunes. The title track is unsurprisingly sunny, like Syd Barrett covering the Beatles. ‘You’re Out of This World’ is another quirky, sunny pop song, sounding both contemporary and decidedly psychedelic. ‘Away with the Swans’ is like a laid-back Lennon song from 1967 spliced with a laid-back Queens of the Stone Age song from 2001. ‘Let’s Go Out Tonight’ is the rockiest on the album, like a Bowie song when he was trying to rip off the Velvets. Closer ‘Where You’re Going’ is based around a strummed acoustic, a relaxed, sophisticated end to a great, well rounded record.
