intro
Over the top, but stylish and eclectic latest album from Chicago-based musician and protest singer, Bobby Conn
Now on an English label, Chicago's Bobby Conn gets a further chance to stage his protest songs, set to a bunch of funky licks and breaks. A hop, skip and jump through music styles, 'Macaroni' touches ground on Balkan beats, jiggy klezmer and Philadelphia soul, and also throws in two spoonfuls of Afro-funk. There are moments when Bobby Conn tries out his best Billy Joel impersonations and I recommend skipping 'More Than You Need'. Consistent in going over the top, the album becomes a most complex set of tunes. Zappa suckers better pricketh up thy ears here. 'Greed' must be the winning track here. It is grim glam rock to get you through the credit crunch. A self-proclaimed nihilist, Bobby Conn likes a bit of drama and theatre. Think early Tubes and loud Mothers Of Invention with a touch of the Danube sound. Prog mock of irony and style.
