intro
Instantly catchy second single from ska-influenced Manchester group Janice Graham Band, who, while drawing comparisons with the Arctic Monkeys and the Specials, have a distinctive sound of their own
Well, in the current economic climate, who does have money, honey? Hailing from south Manchester Janice Graham Band mix ska, punk, dance beats to shape their own particular brand of musical story telling. They have been compared to both the Arctic Monkeys for their “'lyrical chutzpah” and the Specials “at their lairiest.” This single, the second taken from the mini concept album 'It's Not Me', is released on February 20th. The single mixes plaintive trumpets, fast dance style drums, wah wah guitar and cheeky chappy spoken but sung lyrics. There are some echoes thrown in for good measure. I can see why they are compared to both the Artics and the Specials but at the same time they wouldn't get mistaken for either. This is a good thing I think. The world doesn't need more derivative bands. This single is both instantly catchy and bares repeated listens for the lyrics. The second track 'I Give Up' sounds less polished and sure where it is trying to go. It is more repetitive and rougher ,and a little too reliant on effects and screeching.
