intro
Entertaining Englebert Humperdick charity cover single from under rated Bristol-based indie rockers, New Rhodes
Three years ago New Rhodes bruised the Top 40 singles charts with 'You've Given Me Something that I Can't Give Back' and when ace debut LP, 'Songs from the Lodge', was released soon after it seemed that they would be a household name within weeks. The musical gods, however, weren’t smiling and the band slipped off the radar until a second LP, 'Everybody Loves a Scene', was released last year. Despite being at least the equal of their debut, it failed the capture the hearts of the music buying public and again success evaded the band. 'Quando Quando Quando', an entertaining cover of the Englebert Humperdink hit, could be seen as the band’s last ditch attempt at fame if it wasn’t for the fact that they are doing it in the name of charity with all proceeds going to War Child. Whilst the lead track is instantly recognizable due to its former life, it is in fact the two extra tracks that are the real highlights of this release. 'The Bells of St John' taken from 'Everybody Loves a Scene' showcases the band’s ability to do touching slowies with the best of them, while new track 'Someone Else' is an urgent and jaunty guitar number reminding us just why we shouldn’t let this band disappear. Go and buy.
