intro
Excellent, autobiographical collection of soundtrack music from Pablo, the project of Glasgow-based electronic musician Michael Hunter
Pablo is Michael Hunter. Michael Hunter is a very talented and gifted individual. This double album has something for any serious music lover and will be of equal appeal to fans of many different genres. It is one of those albums that is worth so much more than the price of the sticker on it. Describing it is a bit like like being asked if can you explain in a few words why a piece of artwork beautiful. Is it the main theme? Is it the use of colour? Is it the way each part is separated? Is it the message or the imagery ? The answer is yes to all of these and them some. Woven into this brilliant work is a tongue-in-cheek story that flicks across and takes account of some of the parts of Hunter's life. This album has a powerful presence with tracks recalling John Barry or Ennioo Morricone as the strings and horns are interlaced with some stunning results to the beats, bass lines and vocals. Next we have skippy, funky tracks with guitar stabs that are reminiscent of early George Benson’s jazz guitar style (It may well be Benson as it is of the same quality). Piano is used perfectly giving a soul and structure to some tracks which will have you more chilled than an ice lolly in an igloo. There is a great atmospheric power to all of this album. While listening to it, I felt that I could be watching a large cinema screen with a big fight scene unfolding of the kind that John Barry would write for Harry Palmer in 'The Ipcress File' or for Connery playing Bond in a spectacular chase or fight scene. To sum up, this album takes you on a perfectly constructed journey. You have a host of instruments both being played and sampled over soundtracks which themselves are very listenable. It be either enjoyed and discussed critically or just popped on and allowed to create ab atmosphere. If you like clever ,technically brilliant music then buy this album, you will not be disappointed .
