intro

Unsubtle, but highly impressive second album from female-fronted metal band, Hydrogen

Having not heard of Hydrogyn before, I was keen to explore what this fusion of metal and female vocalists had to offer. Without intending to sound like an idolater of women, I have always appreciated the presence the effect a female vocalist has upon a group. Such previous venerable examples include 'Bring Me To Life' by Evanescence, and 'Don’t Speak' by No Doubt. Thus I was genuinely intrigued to hear what Hydrogyn had to offer Despite the unsubtle and clichéd opening guitar riffs to the album with 'Rejection', I was not disappointed with Julie Westlake’s (vocalist) amazing vocals. This paved the way after its sharp closure to synch into the potentially anthemic 'On and on'. The standout tracks, however, have to be the cover of Alanis Morissette’s 'You Oughta Know' (that surprisingly works, and without using any profanities), and the excellent title track, 'Deadly Passion'. Like most of the tracks present here, they are as subtle as a mugging, yet as catchy as your first crush, with the exception being 'Candles Light Your Face', which gives a perfect example of the layered sound that Hydrogen can be produce. Suffice to say, this is not a subtle album, but one that is better for it. The passionate themes at work here would not work as well for a more elegant or layered album, and will appeal to what I suspect are its target audience (female metal fans), but the excellence of Hydrogyn music means the album will appeal to a wider audience. Needless to say to this is one album I will be listening to a lot over the coming months.
